Michelle Padilla Studies Abroad through University of San Diego Program

2011 Aug 29

University of San Diego student Michelle Padilla of San Diego studied abroad in Jamaica this summer. Padilla took part in USD's three-week faculty-led program offering students the chance to study the history and culture of Jamaica by taking a course in either sociology or literature. A cornerstone of the program is community service and cultural immersion. USD students visit a local elementary school, help lead classes and interact with children in an effort to better know Jamaican culture. Students visit sites of cultural, literary and historical significance and make a trip to an extremely rare bioluminescence bay. Padilla is majoring in psychology.

USD is ranked second in the nation for the percentage of undergraduate students studying abroad, according to the Institute of International Education's Open Doors Report. Nearly 66 percent of all USD undergraduate students study abroad.
