Hannah Holmquist of Lancaster Joins New USD Veterans Group

2011 Nov 4

Hannah Holmquist from Lancaster has joined the new Student Veteran Organization at the University of San Diego. Holmquist is a sophomore at USD. "I want to serve those that serve our country," said Holmquist, a civilian.

The organization was formed at USD by eager veterans wanting to provide peer support and have active recognition on campus. In just a few weeks, the group has gained more than 40 members and has garnered support from various clubs, organizations and individuals on campus, as well as members in the local community. Members of the group will be advocating for veterans' issues as well as for those on active duty and their dependents. The Student Veteran Organization is a chapter of the Student Veterans of America and supports various charities including the Wounded Warriors and the San Diego Diplomacy Council.

USD currently enrolls 147 veterans, up from 35 in 2008. USD participates in the Yellow Ribbon program within the GI Bill to support veterans' education.

"Veterans Day is an opportunity to thank this generation of veterans who have made incredible sacrifices and contributions on behalf of their country," said USD President Mary Lyons, a veteran herself who had a 25-year career as a U.S. Naval Reserve Officer. "We are honored that so many veterans are choosing to attend USD and are committed to making USD a welcoming environment that understands their needs and helps them to prepare for successful careers in the civilian world."

The University of San Diego is a Catholic institution of higher learning chartered in 1949; the school enrolls some 7,800 undergraduate and graduate students and is known for its commitment to teaching, the liberal arts, the formation of values and community service. The fall 2007 establishment of the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies brings the University's total number of schools and colleges to six. Other academic divisions include the College of Arts and Sciences and the schools of Business Administration, Leadership and Education Sciences, Law and Nursing and Health Sciences.
